This book is the sequel to "The Rich Are Different" with some of the same characters plus the progeny of some of them. I definitely do NOT recommend"Sins of the Fathers" if you haven't the first book. Although there are parts of the first book repeated through memories or discussions, it is better to read the books in order.

As in the first book, most of the characters are rather unlikeable. They are power junkies in the investment banking world of the early 20th century who not only try to control their colleagues, but who also try to control family members by rather despicable means. I sometimes felt sorry for some of the mean-spirited people, but it never lasted long, as most of them engaged in all sorts of treachery to get rid of those people they disliked or who had crossed them. If you need likeable characters, this book may not be for you.

Nonetheless, this book has a good plot and great character development and I could certainly see how the character flaws of one generation affected the next. I gave it 4 stars rather than 5, because I found the characters and their power plays tiring after awhile.

Sins of the Fathers Susan Howatch 9780449207987 Books Reviews

Like Wheel of Fortune, I found this book very engaging almost to the point of being addictive. She is brilliant at depicting characters and relationships in a way that sucks you in and keeps you turning pages hypnotically right to the very end.
An intriguing and compelling read! I loved the technique of continuing the story through narration by the various characters. Also loved the literary and art references. It can definitely stand alone, but since this was a sequel, I will go back now and read the first book.
Read this after "The Rich are Different". It carries on right where TRAD left off and is just as good.

The story continues with Cornelius and his daughter Vicky and that whole generation. It touches briefly on Dinah and wraps up the whole family saga in a very satisfying way.
I read this book some 15-20 years ago. I remembered none of it, so it was like reading it afresh.

The multiple viewpoints were genius. When you only see a character through the eyes of other characters, you don't really get to know them. You will know these characters thoroughly by the time you finish.

Deeply personal and psychological, you will either love or hate these characters. Highly recommended.
First I read The Rich Are Different then the sequel Sins of Our Fathers, also first time reading anything by Susan Howatch. I found her books to riveting and was enamored with the writing, the characters, and the weaving of the situations throughout both books. I found myself thinking about the characters during the day - now that is a good book. Towards the end the story did drag on a bit however this did not deter from the story. The book incorporates love, money, ambition, competitiveness, loyalty, jealousy, and hate - what could be better for a great read. You owe it to yourself to read these novels.
I absolutely LOVE Susan Howatch's books. She is the most amazing and intelligent author. Each "part" is written through the eyes of a different character and brilliantly done. SH "becomes" those people. Her books combine an accurate account of history with such complex characters that all seem to work beautifully together. Sins of the Fathers is the follow up to The Rich are Different, so I highly recommend you read The Rich are Different first. These two books were just as great the second time around. The Wheel of Fortune is another amazing book, but then again, there hasn't been a book of hers I don't love.
I really enjoyed The Rich are Different about banking families in the 1920's and 1930's in the US and England who were driven by greed, cunning, ambition, revenge, love (inside and outside of marriage), need for security and hope for the lives of their many children. I wondered if Howatch could match the original in the sequel following the lives of some of the children, but sadly this is not so.

After many unscrupulous dealings, Cornelius Van Zale won the battle for his late uncle's banking empire. He is now the undisputed king of the castle over his contemporaries and his offspring and stepchildren. When his daughter Vicki who the apple of his eye tries to elope with a poor beach boy Cornelius goes into protective mode, even suggesting that his partner Sam, the same age as him, should marry her to prevent such a marriage. Sam is so browbeaten by Cornelius that he agrees.

In his banking world, Cornelius continues to encounter complicated rivalries and affairs that impact on the unfinished business when he took over the bank come back to haunt him. He suppresses his memory of his involvement in the brutal affairs of the past but is constantly reminded of them by Scott Sullivan, stepson of his sister Emily, who he had shared the upbringing after Scott's father died tragically in an auto accident which he had engineered to get rid of any threats to his position in the bank. While Scott is an important partner in the bank, he has a dark side which Cornelius never understands.

Howatch weaves a complex tale of intrigue, family problems, adultery, deceit, espionage, adultery, murder, blackmail, impotence, alcoholism, chronic illness, perversion, revenge and split personalities. Unfortunately, I found this to be a very poor sequel to The Rich are Different with almost cardboard characters, and a mostly unbelievable plot.
