I'm pleased that the author takes into account that many of us have a fixed or low budget for all that fancy stuff in our yards like landscaping! Like me, I'm sure many of us just throw a few seeds out there and pull out the dandelions. But I'm from a farm family, so I might know a little more. Out on the farm our idea of landscaping was a few rows of poplar trees and pastures.We knew soil, though. Had just one kind--640 acres of it. Landscaped it with oats, wheat and barley. Very practical. But now, in my semi-retirement years, I'm glad the author educates me about small plot landscaping. Soil biology is good to know as I have to BUY DIRT! Practical stuff too, like avoiding utilities and natural gas lines. See where the sun shines on my old Washington home. If some plants are going to grow for years, such as trees, plan for that too so you don't have roots wrapping around your water pipes and sidewalks.
KNOW AND CHOOSE YOUR PLANTS -- after all, like a parent you'll want to be proud of them as they grow up. HOW TO BUY PLANTS -- good counsel here on trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, annuals and perennials. Got to consider raised beds and layer landscaping, watering and irrigation, composting and fertilizer, pruning, pests and wildlife. All good stuff to know -- concise and clear.

This book does not give any good information about landscaping. If you're a beginner on a budget this is not the book you are going to want to purchase, very misleading.
While only really a primer, this guide was perfect for a future homeowner whose only experience with gardening is minimal and long forgotten. But having read this I am more excited than trepidatious when it comes to landscaping my home. Off to do more extensive research.
