Napoleon’s army of 600,000 has decided not to invade England and is headed to Russia. The Admiralty want to know what happens to Napoleon and his man in Russia. If they survive, they may return to France with over a million fighting men to attack England. If they fail, then England will be safe for a time. News travels slowly by land but faster by sea.

Ben and his ship are sent to the White Sea to the Solovetsky Islands to rendezvous with an English spy. Ben is warned to return as soon as possible to avoid the frozen Arctic seas. When the spy does not appear on time, Ben sets out towards Moscow with two trusted men. He watches Moscow burn and sees the long trail of Frenchmen, now starving, setting out on the long, bitter cold trek back to France. Only a few thousand of them ever make it, the rest starving or freezing on the way.

Ben heads back to his ship. He and his men are waylaid by brigands and he is injured, the rest killed. Ben struggles back to his ship on badly frost bitten feet. He finds his ship quickly freezing into the sea. His surgeon amputates some toes. Then they are off to England with the news of the French army.

Once he recovers, Ben is sent to the Caribbean to escort refugees from the colonies to safer places. War is already in progress over the seizure of American seamen by the British. On one trip, Ben is frustrated by the number of new babies that are born aboard ship. He takes part in the maneuvers at Plattsburg and is court martialled for using his medical skills to save American sailors. He is sent back on blockade duty. Later, he sees Washington burn and has to deal with spies among his own men.

Ben is injured again at New Orleans and Tom is captured by pirates and forced to serve with them. Eventually both men are sent home to recover. American and British history come together in these pages and light a fire to guide men in future so that they do not destroy all that has happened in the past that made them brothers. Book 8 of 9 in The Rundel Series.

Once again, the saga continues. My past reviews continue to ring true. The story line is excellent, but the end printed Kindle product is seriously lacking; too many typos and missing sentences. The story line is a strong 5 stars but the presentation is an abysmal 2-3 stars. It is an ongoing story line that gives the "home spun" touch to history from the eyes of a fictional character that is where the action is. His friend and associate, Tom, adds a one-two punch to Rundel's life and experiences. Being the "expendable" Captain has the natural consequences of glory associated with the more flamboyant experiences associated with Rundel. For the most part, all who read this saga can identify with the idea that "pets of the Crown" get the cushy jobs and the promotions based solely on their family and status or the status of their relations, while Rundel has to prove time and again that he is worthy of the honor of being a real hero. Great job Mr. Stark. I will miss the Rundel story after the next and final book.

Lots of derringdo & some interesting introspection, but having hero reading Dickens in 1812-1814 was a showstopper, at least for me.
Interesting continuation of the Rundel series. The author stretches too far in this book in her attempt to include the Captain in as much of history as possible during the American War of 1812 by having Rundel navigate up the Niagara River from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie decades before the Welland Canal was in service.
After reading all 9 books I thionk that i enjoyed the Admiral the best. I enjoyed the war, battle parts, sometimes the reading became a bit tiring but as a whole good reading if a person is into the sea and sailing ships.GBC Sandy Ut
A little drawn out. A struggle to read in some parts. Hope the concluding book brings some conclusion without being a downer
Realitively weak like the whole series. The author would rather write about kittens and tea totaling than any sense of fighting knowledge and the fact that NO ONE could be wounded and captured as many times as Rundell and live to tell it.
Not the best in the genre and the lack of attention to actual history can throw you off in the tale. Reread Hornblower adventures for a better experience.
The Rundel story continues, and it is readable as adventure. Historically and geographically it is less than accurate. For instance on the way to the White Sea they set extra watches for icebergs and sailed around several. In real life icebergs on the stretch up to the Kola peninsula is as common as free roaming polar bears in Hyde Park, London (or Central Park, N.Y.). Yes, the White Sea freezes in winter, so to combat ice there is likely, but from around Murmansk and west/south it is ice free all year. Also the description of midnight sun is strange.
The story plot is definitely readable if you ignore such real life items as mentioned above.
