Exquisite Captive Dark Caravan Cycle Heather Demetrios Books

This was one of the books I was really looking forwards to.... but I hate to say that it really disappointed me :(

First off, the characters:
We don't really get to know them all that well. I think the author put more details into the random details of their world, in which we don't get to see, only hear about constantly, than into the characters. Characters mean the most to me, so that was a problem.

Nalia is supposed to be this kick-ass super soldier--the most powerful there is. She trains every day and does katas and can do intricate magic that no other Jinn can... yet every time she's in trouble, she turns into a damsel in distress. I just... I could NOT understand her getting thrown around so much. Even the final battle at the end was weak-sauce. :(

Raif was supposed to be the love interest. And I really did like him and his sister, but I wanted to get to know him MORE, better. There just wasn't enough character to make me love him like Nalia suddenly did.

Speaking of suddenly... the romance was... odd for me. It wasn't love at first sight, but it did jump up suddenly to me. They were in a mutual agreement, and then suddenly at the end, they're proclaiming their love and I was like "WHOOA buddy, what? That's quick"

Malek was the abusive master, but it really confused me in the beginning. Because we're TOLD he's abusive and evil and we're TOLD all this bad stuff. Then we meet him and he's kind... uh. Threw me for a loop. Then his meanie habits are easily explained. Oh, he's random-raging because he's half ifrit.... m'kay. I have a feeling in book 2 there will turn out to be some sort of a love triangle now that their relationship is even. :/

The world building was really heavy. So much so that I skipped over whole paragraphs because they were about leaves in the Jinn world. I like me some world building here and there, I'm interesting in the Jinn world, but it was just TOOO much. I know more about the Jinn world than the characters :/

This is a good book if you really love world building.

Exquisite Captive Dark Caravan Cycle Heather Demetrios Books Reviews

This book Is unique and absolutely captivating! I've never read anything quite like this. A fantasy that completely swept me away. Heather Demetrios writing Is flawless and detailed. You meet Nalia who is a jinni who is sold to her master, Malek in the Dark Caravan slave trade. Malek like I said is her master and the villain of the story or is he? I have never been so confused by a character. One minute you see him being horrible and mean to Nalia and then the next minute you see him being protective, vulnerable, and sweet. Malek was a character that captivated me. He was complex, compelling, and powerful. They're are so many layers to his character.

"If he'd killed you... I think I would have burned the world down."

Malek completely commanded my attention Every time he is in the book. My attention he completely got.

" She'd seen a side of her master she hadn't known could possibly exist, a gentleness that held her after nightmares, a passion that called to her, a siren song. Something inside him- something fundamental- had changed."

There is a love triangle in this book. Raif, the revolutionary leader is the other love interest. To be honest I just wasn't feeling a connection between the two of them. I'm definitely pulling for Malek. I know I'm probably in the minority and setting myself up for suffering, but to me there was so much chemistry between Nalia and Malek.

Heather Demetrios has created such a unique story with beautiful writing. It's dark and it sucks you in. This is why I love to read. To be taken away on a journey and get completely drawn into the characters and their lives. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK! Gripping from beginning to end.
So the short part of this review is that I loved this book. Now you might be asking yourself, if you loved it why did it only get 3.5 Stars, so let me explain. This world and these characters are are so complex and flushed out and Demetrios's writing made the real to me. I was able to fully immerse myself in the world of the Jinni and the Dark Caravan. This book kept my full attention and I hated the times I had to put it down to study, sleep, or go to class. But I'm also glad I was able to take my time when reading this and have time to think about the world and characters outside of actively reading.

That being said I had a few issues with this book. The world is incredibly complex and while there was a glossary of sorts at the beginning that still was not enough to truly accustom myself to the world and the culture. The first 40-50 pages of this book were pure info dump, I love complex worlds with great world building and this world definitely needed that. Instead, I felt like all this information was being shoved down my throat and I did not retain half of it. I instead relied on the characters and the plot to help piece together what I missed in the info dump.

If I did not have such a problem with this first 50ish pages of this book, it would have been a 4.5-5 star read, but I really cannot overlook how much the beginning irritated me.

I cannot wait until my copy of Blood Passages arrives so I can continue to follow these characters on their quest and see where it leads them. I'm expecting more surprising reveals and more connections being made and cannot wait to see where the story goes.
